Gluten-Free Burger Options in South Jersey: The Lettuce Wrap Game

4 min read

Looking for gluten-free burger options in South Jersey? Red Barn Burgers offers lettuce wraps on every burger. How to order, what to avoid, and what to pair it with.

Eating gluten-free at a burger restaurant is one of those situations where you have to ask the right questions to get the right meal. Most burger spots will swap the bun for lettuce on request, but there's a difference between a true gluten-free preparation and "we took the bun off." Here's how Red Barn handles it, and what to ask for on pickup.

The lettuce wrap option

Every burger on the Red Barn menu can be made as a lettuce wrap. The patty stays the same — our Certified Angus brisket-chuck-short rib blend, ground fresh, smashed on a 500-degree griddle — and the toppings stay the same. The Martin's Potato Roll just gets swapped out for fresh iceberg lettuce that wraps the burger end-to-end. That means you still get the cheese, the Barn sauce, the shaved pickles, the tomato, the onion — the entire flavor profile of the burger, minus the bun.

A note on celiac vs. gluten-sensitive

Red Barn is a shared kitchen, which means we cook gluten-containing items (buns, fried items, breaded chicken) on the same equipment. For gluten-sensitive customers who are doing their best to avoid wheat, the lettuce wrap is a great option. For diagnosed celiac customers who require strict cross-contamination control, please call ahead — we're honest about what we can and can't guarantee, and we'd rather you have a clear picture before you order than be surprised.

What's naturally gluten-free on the menu

  • Any burger ordered as a lettuce wrap (no bun)
  • Hand-spun shakes — both classic and premium flavors
  • House-made lemonade
  • Bottled drinks (Coke, Sprite, Boylan's flavors, Abita Root Beer, Diet Coke, Gatorade)
  • Apple cider donuts are NOT gluten-free — they're made with wheat flour. Skip them if gluten is a hard no.

What to watch out for

Fries are a common trip-up at burger restaurants. Many spots fry their fries in oil shared with breaded items. Confirm with us at order time if this matters to you. The Barn sauce and other house sauces are made in-house — if you have a question about specific ingredients, just ask when you pick up and we'll walk you through what's in them.

How to order on pickup

When you build your burger online, look for the lettuce wrap option in the modifiers — it's usually under the bun selection. If you don't see it on a specific product, just add a note to your order ("lettuce wrap, no bun") and we'll handle it. We're a pickup-only spot in the Old Mill Antique Mall in Mullica Hill, so there's no waiter to misunderstand — your order ticket prints exactly what you typed.

What to order

The all-American burger as a lettuce wrap is the easiest entry point — clean flavors, all the classic toppings. If you want something heartier, the bacon barn burger holds up well without the bun because the bacon and Barn sauce carry the bite. Avoid the kennet square truffled mushroom swiss burger if you want it tidy — the mushrooms and aioli get messy without a bun.
